City Council Approves Golf Carts for Nocatee Neighborhoods
Last month, the Jacksonville City Council delivered a unanimous vote of approval for a bill that allows the use of low-speed electric vehicles within the Duval County portion of the Nocatee community. Throughout the St. Johns County portions of the development's Greenway Trails in Nocatee, golf carts were already allowed in the 32081 subdivisions. Now, the Duval subdivisions are compliant in joining the rest of the master planned community with an eco-friendly alternative mode of transportation.
The Parc Group, Nocatee's developer, has already submitted construction plans for cart paths on the northwest side of the development to connect with pathways in St. Johns County. This will allow residents to travel around the entire area with access to the community's Splash Water Park, recreational areas, shops, dog parks and the Town Center via golf carts. Noise free, eco-friendly travel was always the plan for the first Electric Vehicle-approved community in Northeast Florida. Now, neighborhood electric vehicles, bike paths, pedestrian walkways and golf cart roadways will connect the area's wildlife corridors, wetlands and amenities for all residents.
The bill in Duval County established several requirements that are common to other communities that allow for low-speed electric vehicles in other vehicle-parts of the state. Golf cart drivers must be at least 16 years old and hold a valid driver's license. As is the case with gasoline-powered vehicles, drivers with a learner's permit can legally operate the vehicle as long as they are accompanied by a licensed driver. To be used at night, all golf carts and low-speed electric vehicles must be equipped with headlights, taillights, brake lights and turn signals. Golf carts that are not fully equipped can only be operated during daytime hours.
