ADA Requirements for Electric Shuttle Buses

ADA Requirements for Electric Shuttle Buses

On July 26th, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) celebrated its 21st anniversary. After years of campaigning by individuals and organizations, President George "H.W." Bush signed the legislation that created a new collective consciousness about discriminatory practices against those with disabilities. Prior to that time, the transportation industry had very vague guidelines for providing services for handicapped passengers.

Over the past two decades, the ADA has worked diligently to ensure that all transport vehicles including electric shuttle buses and other low-speed vehicles (LSVs) are easily accessible for all passengers and safe for those traveling with a disability. At Moto Electric Vehicles, we proudly stay on top of all changes enacted by the ADA and any of our electric buses can be equipped with ADA bus requirements to include:

  • Manual or Mechanical Wheelchair Ramps
Ramps must be rated for a minimum load of 600 pounds and must be able to operate if there is a power failure or equipment malfunction.
  • Safety Platforms for Boarding and Loading
Based upon the size of the electric shuttle, boarding platforms must be a prescribed length, have to fit evenly with the docking area, must have a 2-inch protective lip to prevent roll offs, and need to be clearly marked with color-contrast steps or edges.
  • Slip Resistant Surfaces
All aisles, steps, walkways and securement areas must have slip-resistant coatings.
  • Securement System or Anchoring Devices
Vehicles should provide a safe and secure system for anchoring wheelchairs or other mobility aids. These should be placed as close as possible to the handicap entrance and exit ramps.
  • Priority Seating Signs
Contrast signage should indicate that certain seats near the front of the electric shuttle are designated for use by individuals with disabilities. Wheelchair securement locations should be similarly marked.

Whether your needs include providing electric shuttle services for an institutional setting, healthcare facility, resort, amusement park, church or commercial parking lot, Moto Electric Vehicles can help you select the best ADA-equipped new or used vehicle.
