City Council Approves Golf Carts for Nocatee Neighborhoods Image

Last month, the Jacksonville City Council delivered a unanimous vote of approval for a bill that allows the use of low-speed electric vehicles within the Duval County portion of the Nocatee community. Throughout the St. Johns County portions of the development's Greenway Trails in Nocatee, golf carts were already allowed in the 32081 subdivisions. Now, the Duval subdivisions are compliant in joining the rest of the master planned community with an eco-friendly alternative mode of transportation. The Parc Group, Nocatee's developer, has already submitted construction plans for cart paths on the northwest side of the development to connect with pathways in St. Johns County. This will allow residents to travel around the entire area with access to the community's Splash Water Park,...

The Gulf Island National Seashore has offered the use of six electric shuttles, manufactured by the Florida-based Moto Electric Vehicles, to the city of Pensacola while it waits on the ferry service to begin in 2018. Curt Morse, executive director of the Downtown Improvement Board, told the board at its meeting Tuesday he was working to have the trolleys put into service in downtown Pensacola by Memorial Day. The details of the program are still being finalized with Escambia County Area Transit, the city of Pensacola and the Studer Community Institute, among others, Morse said. Washington State Receives First Electric Taxis Under New Low-Speed Laws Image

Kate Dwyer and Myron Gauger of PTeRider recently received Washington state's first electric vehicles to be used locally as shared taxis in the waterfront town of Port Townsend. The nostalgic bright red electric taxis feature a retro look with polished Model-A headlights, chrome grille and bumper, and six-spoke rims. Although the couple expects to hire drivers in the future, right now there's a daily fight to see who gets to pilot the eye-popping street legal electric vehicles. "It has attracted so much interest," said Gauger. "It's cool seeing how many people smile when you come by." PTeRider has regularly prescribed routes to downtown, Uptown and Fort Worden. Use Good Sense Behind the Wheel

Use Good Sense Behind the Wheel Image

The first electric golf cart was built in 1932 but widespread acceptance did not occur until the 1950s when they were used as an alternative means of individual transportation for people with disabilities. Since that time, the golf cart has become faster and more nimble. Today, it is both amazing and scary to see all the things that people do with electric golf carts. Recently, the Center for Injury Research and Policy at Nationwide Children's Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, discovered that nearly 148,000 golf cart-related injuries were reported between 1990 to 2006. Because these vehicles are being used in resorts, hospitals, industrial settings, airports, campuses and on the roadways of low-speed communities, many of the 13,500 reported injuries in 2006 occurred away from the...

Vehicle emissions are a major reason that many cities have a higher than average air pollution level. In the United States, our modern lifestyle depends heavily on the use of private vehicles as we go about our daily routines. As our industrial society began to develop, neighborhoods popped up in the suburban areas surrounding our major cities. The place people lived moved further and further away from commercial areas, which created a need for more and more high-speed thoroughfares (where street legal golf carts are prohibited) to accommodate daily commutes. Over the past two decades, ideas...
