Neighborhood Electric Vehicles (NEVs)

Neighborhood electric vehicles (NEVs) are capable of traveling at a top speed of 25 MPH and are equipped to be legally operated on roadways with a posted speed limit of 35 MPH or less. Moto Electric's NEVs (also known as electric low-speed vehicles or LSVs) come with standard safety features such as seat belts, running lights, headlights, windshields, brake lights, rearview mirrors, turn signals and windshield wipers. NEVs are environmentally friendly low-speed electric vehicles that run off rechargeable lead acid batteries and can be charged in full by being plugged into a standard electrical outlet for 6 to 8 hours. Whether you are hauling cargo, carrying tools, pulling a trailer, delivering food or maintaining a facility's landscape, our street-legal neighborhood utility vehicle is perfect for any job.

Our larger neighborhood electric vehicles can transport up to 24-passengers making them an ideal option as a parking shuttle, event shuttle, electric church bus or resort shuttle. A smaller low-speed vehicle or street legal golf cart from Moto Electric Vehicles is perfect for taking family members with you for an evening cruise. We offer a nationwide warranty and nationwide delivery on any electric vehicle that we sell. Plus, Moto Electric Vehicles has great application packages and vehicle accessories for light-duty payloads, food service deliveries or emergency response vehicles. If you choose, you can purchase your neighborhood electric vehicle in Jacksonville, Florida, or we can ship your NEV or LSV anywhere in the continental United States.

Federal Regulations for NEVs

The Federal Vehicle Safety Standard 500, enacted in 1998, reduced the federal safety requirements for 4-wheel vehicles with a gross weight of less than 3,000 lbs. However, the manufacturers of low-speed vehicles (top speed of 25 MPH or less) are required by federal regulations to incorporate many of the safety features found on traditional vehicles, such as seat belts, shoulder harnesses, headlights, brake lights, turn signals, reflectors, running lights, rear view mirrors and parking brakes. NEV owners are allowed to customize their neighborhood electric vehicle to meet their own requirements for work or play. To allow for easy access and a more scenic view, many low-speed vehicles do not have doors but fully-enclosed body work is available when there's a need to protect passengers from the weather or other environmental elements.

Safety Standards for Electric Utility Vehicles

Regulations for operating a NEV or LSV differ greatly from those that govern full-sized electric automobiles and other green vehicles to include key regulatory differences such as:

  • Low-speed electric vehicles must not be capable of speeds above 25 MPH
  • Neighborhood electric vehicles must have four wheels
  • Three-wheel vehicles do not qualify for NEV or LSV status
  • Most states recognize NEVs as street-legal vehicles
  • NEVs can only be used on roads with a speed limit of 35 MPH or less
  • Gross weight limit for low-speed vehicle status is 3,000 lbs. or less

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has a regulatory mandate under the United States Department of Transportation code for the motorized vehicular safety assurance to issue Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards and Regulations that manufacturers of NEVs, LSVs and street legal golf carts must meet. The United States Office of Vehicle Safety Compliance is responsible for ensuring that American consumers are protected under the nation's "strict liability laws" against any unreasonable risks as a result of any vehicle's design, construction or performance. The NEV (neighborhood electric vehicle) and LSV (low speed vehicle) fall under a special classification created by the NHTSA for use on neighborhood, subdivision and city streets where the top speed is limited to 35 MPH or less.

Neighborhood Electric Vehicles For Sale

We have dozens of styles of neighborhood electric vehicles for sale that are legal to operate on low speed limit streets where the vehicle does not exceed the regulated 25 MPH top speed. This makes the NEV a very popular choice for residents living in golf course communities, retirement neighborhoods, gated subdivisions, construction sites and historic urban areas. In the late 1990s, the Walt Disney Corporation developed a low-speed concept community that allows residents to use neighborhood electric vehicles for easy travel, shopping, dining and daily living in areas adjacent to the "Magic Kingdom." Area residents can navigate the theme park's streets and boulevards without having to access any higher speed limit roadways. Celebration, Florida, is still an ideal model for a functional, modern day NEV community.

Residents across the United States (who are looking for an alternative to today's high-speed world with mile-long traffic jams) can find a NEV-friendly community in almost any area of the country. These environmentally friendly townships encourage the use of low-speed electric utility vehicles and street legal golf carts to reduce their "footprint" on the planet by reducing the use of fossil fuels. Some futuristic properties have even started to incorporate community designs for a grid of charging stations to better accommodate today's green vehicles. Typically, NEV owners are required to register their low speed electric vehicle with the appropriate State agency and must possess a valid State driver's license to operate their vehicle on public streets and highways. Since neighborhood electric vehicles are exempt from many federal safety regulations, vehicles are not equipped to travel on high-speed Interstates, highways or expressways.

One-Stop Shopping at Moto Electric Vehicles

Moto Electric Vehicles is your one-stop-shop for neighborhood electric vehicles, low speed vehicles, street-legal golf carts, electric buses, parking shuttles, electric security vehicles and a variety of other electric-powered vehicles for both work and play. For your convenience, each category of electric low speed vehicles contains a listing for each NEV's standard features, safety equipment, technical specifications and options. Like most vehicles, by using aftermarket equipment, you can modify your neighborhood electric vehicle for an additional 10 MPH. However, vehicles that are capable of speeds in excess of 25 MPH fall into a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's category with much stricter regulations.

Neighborhood electric vehicles do not require special charging stations and most street-legal vehicles can be charged using a standard 110V electrical outlet like those found in any home. Some larger utility vehicles, electric buses or low-speed shuttles may require a 220V outlet like those used to power your household dryer or stove. Typically, the operating range of a NEV or LSV is limited to 50 miles or less between charging. Such limitations are enough to discourage today's owner from any thoughts of using their NEV for highway road trips. If you're searching for a people hauler, be sure to visit our website's section on Electric Buses and Resort Shuttles. Moto Electric carries several models of low-speed transit vehicles that are ideal for moving multiple passengers using a NEV.
