NHTSA Federal Safety Standard 500
With the rise in popularity of the low-speed electric vehicle throughout golf course communities nationwide, the National Highway Traffic Administration recognized the need for a new category of street-legal vehicles. The result was the implementation of Safety Standard No. 500 which established the following requirements :
- Low-speed electric vehicles must be a 4-wheel vehicle
- Low-speed electric vehicles must not be capable of speeds above 25 MPH
- Low-speed electric vehicles operate on roads with a speed limit of 35 MPH
- Low-speed electric vehicles cannot exceed 3,000 lbs. gross weight
- Low-speed electric vehicles must have functional lights and turn signals
- Low-speed electric vehicles must be equipped with seat belts
- Low-speed electric vehicles must have rearview mirrors
Restrictions have also been enacted at the municipal and state levels for specific neighborhoods and communities. In addition, at some private golf course developments and gated neighborhoods, electric golf carts have been approved for use on public streets during daylight hours without having to install lighting kits.
